Here are three great trails for off-roading near Phoenix:
1. Box Canyon
Just southwest of Gold Canyon on the way to Florence, is a 34 mile moderately trafficked trail. There are beautiful views within the canyon and then a slightly challenging climb up the waterfall ladder to exit the trail. Spot historical petroglyphs left over from the ancient Native Americans. There’s also a bypass which provides nice elevations and beautiful vistas. Access Box Canyon via Cottonwood Canyon Road at the west junction of N. Reymert Road, or use Mineral Mountain Road from US60. Call: (602)364-2753 for info on obtaining a trail permit.
2. Bulldog Canyon
This is a great 14.6 mile moderately trafficked out and back trail, with elevations of 1,427 feet. It’s a wonderfully scenic and short trail near Mesa (near Saguaro Lake and Apache Junction). You will need a permit for this trail but can obtain one for free online, just apply at least three days before you go. There are a few different entry and exit points depending on where you’d like to start, in addition to some adjoining trails with higher technical ratings. This is the perfect short trail and ideal for the half-day getaway. You might even see wild horses along the trail.
3. Montana Mountain
Beautiful views can be relished on the ascents and descents of this popular 43.8 mile heavily trafficked loop trail, with elevations of 5,314 feet.
